Our Story
I was raised in BROOKLYN, NY..Where all the Black, Spanish and white families stuck together. Where everyone would speak like they knew ya and even the less fortunate looked out for you. We played outside in every season and ate summer lunches at the public schools, went swimming in public pools. A place where the concrete was perfect for skating, bike riding, double dutch, hopscotch, kickball, basketball, red light green light, mother may I, spin the bottle and run, catch and kiss and runny benches.
Where we played manhunt, hold the world, steal the bacon and many other games that engaged our imagination. Where water fights consisted of pots, pans, cups, buckets and an opened fire hydrant! We got dirty, ate whatever and nobody asked about allergies. Caught lighting bugs in a jar or cup and made keychains out of Lanyard. We weren’t AFRAID OF NOTHING BUT LOOSE DOGS that weren’t ours. The STREET LIGHT was our CURFEW. Chicken was FRIED & Kool-Aid was as important as air. We WALKED to the store and to work and didn’t complain. Fought with our hands and made up the next day. Block parties and sidewalk barbeques were the highlight of our summer! Most of all, if you DISRESPECTED your elders OR LOOKED IN THEIR MOUTH while they were talking to grown folks you would get PUT IN YOUR PLACE! I’M PROUD OF MY BACKGROUND.I will never forget.
